Liberia's road to independence has not been easy. You could say the country was built on the darker histories of the 18th and 19th centuries, as it was founded by emancipated slaves. Liberia, on the other hand, represented a newfound freedom for those who had been victims of the slave trade. It signified a nod to the homeland and a separate country to govern. However, sprouting from colonialism's seeds in West Africa was never going to be easy, and Liberia now bears the scars of numerous civil wars, coups, political revolutions, and power struggles, not to mention the devastating Ebola outbreak of recent years.
