El Salvador, tucked away at the bottom of Central America on the route to nowhere, is frequently neglected by overlanding backpackers. Which is a shame, because it's just as beautiful as its more famous neighbors, with Mayan ruins, avenues of smoking volcanoes, tranquil Spanish-colonial settlements situated in flower-filled valleys, and long, broad lengths of surf-friendly Pacific coast. And, because it is almost the same area as New Jersey, you can see the most gorgeous spots in a few days.
