Prensa Libre was founded in 1951. It was formerly the most widely circulated newspaper in the country and as of 2007, it has the second-widest circulation. Prensa Libre is considered a local newspaper of record.
El Periodico is a daily Guatemalan newspaper founded by Jose Ruben Zamora, one of Central America’s leading independent journalists. Zamora established Periodico on November 6, 1996 after he left his previous paper, Siglo Veintiuno. A year later, the paper was purchased by the owners of Prensa Libre.

La Hora, one of the newspapers in Guatemala, was founded by Clemente Marroquin Rojas with the motto “always sincere and always free”. La Hora’s purpose is to consolidate as the medium for those who want a different Guatemala, it means more opportunities for more people. The editors and staff of the newspaper are also critical of corruption and the system that encourages it. La Hora just turned 100 years old in 2020.
La Epoca was a liberal weekly newspaper that operated in Guatemala was founded on February 26, 1988. In June, the newspaper’s office was destroyed by the Guatemalan government backed terrorists for their criticism of the government. The newspaper only operated for four months.
