It's difficult to find a town in Alaska with as many hiking opportunities as Sitka. Sitka has it all: alpine treks, self-guided naturalist excursions, city paths, and historic walks. In the magazine Canadian Runner, it was just named one of America's best communities for running trails.
This isn't an accident, as the pleased inhabitants point out. Sitka Trail Works, a charity dedicated to developing and improving trails across the municipality, developed the large trail system as part of a strategy. The organization collaborates with landowners and government organizations to ensure trail access and development. In the late 1990s, their initial project used freshly laid-off mill workers to rehabilitate trails. The group's objectives include the construction of 16 new hiking trails and the reconstruction of 14 others. The majority of the new and enhanced trails along the road system are now complete; a multi-day, hut-to-hut overnight backpacking loop will be added soon.
So get out there and explore the many well-kept local trails. Bear encounters are uncommon due to their widespread use. Instead, bears prefer to stay on game paths and avoid high-traffic areas. Still, it's a good idea to make some noise, carry bear spray, and keep an eye out for trailhead signs warning hikers of bear encounters. There are also shuttle rides out to the trails if you plan to hike on your own.
